Introduction about CYCAN

WHO WE ARE?

CYCAN is the abbreviation of China Youth Climate Action Network, with the Chinese name of Zhongguo Qingnian Qihou Bianhua Xingdong Wangluo. Established in August 2007, CYCAN is composed of seven active youth environmental organizations whose merits and resources in dealing with climate change are perfectly integrated.

OUR GOALS

CYCAN has always been paying close attention to the global-warming issue and the important role played by Chinese youth in it, in the hope of directing young students to take down-to-earth measures in coping with concrete problems. Meanwhile, CYCAN makes full use of the network platform to seek a new mode for Chinese youth to carry out programs of the same kind and scientifically promote the programs concerning climate change. CYCAN aims at a 20% reduction of greenhouse gas emission in pilot higher education institutions (HEIs) in China before 2012, thus facilitating construction of resource-saving campuses and materializing the national objective of energy saving and emission reduction.

OUR PLAN

Short-term Plan:
Conduct nationwide data surveys combining climate change with CDM among pilot HEIs; organize investigation and research as well as training courses; simultaneously promote HEIs-based initiatives on preventing climate change with small budget funds; establish climate action network throughout the country and embark on activities with joint efforts; publish guidance handbooks, bi-monthly bulletin; set up feature website on climate change; develop learning mechanism; convene the 1st CYCAN annual conference on Climate Change and Chinese Youth Action.

Long-term plan:
Heightening awareness and reforming energy-saving equipment in HEIs can be conducted through consistent efforts to disseminate knowledge of climate change and advocate initiatives, with particular emphasis on powerful energy consumption data surveys, with efficient combination of co-management of data and energy saving with CDM, by means of submitting research report to the relevant state departments.

Programs Introduction

Green Campus Program (Key Project)

“Green Campus” is a project based on intensive investigation and research, supported by powerful data surveys, with simultaneous assessment in the use of energy saving equipment, public awareness, and management patterns. Green Campus seeks for the best energy-saving solutions on campus. Data can be collected and analyzed through surveys on campus energy consumption. Green Campus project will provide proper suggestions for improvement based on the problems found and influence the decision-makers to take actions, for the purpose of saving resources, cutting down on energy consumption, and reducing green-house-gas emissions.

A Research Project of Awareness

By surveying on climate change awareness, we can better understand youth’s view on the issue. The surveys and assessment by data comparison will help us discover the youth’s questions in dealing the climate change, and provide necessary statistic basis for setting up database, promoting climate projects and determining the issues to be discussed in the CYCAN annual conference. Furthermore, we are more than ready to consummate the Green Campus project on the level of awareness.

B Publicity Initiatives

Between the edge of CYCAN itself and the geographical advantage of pilot universities, we will start a series of coordinated initiatives on climate change in order to strengthen the youth momentum in dealing with the issue and promote the influence of CYCAN, thus attainting the goal of raising public awareness of energy-saving, emission reduction and climate change.

C Learning Mechanism

The learning mechanism of CYCAN consists of: daily news brief of climate change, study salon and research methods. By daily study, discussion and research, we will look for the most suitable way for youth to deal with climate change.
CYCAN releases a daily climate news from both home and abroad, which is called CYCAN DAILY NEWS BRIEF OF GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE. If you want to subscribe, please send an email to cycanoffice@gmail.com

D Guidance Handbook

Starting from February 2008, CYCAN has been editing Guidance Handbook of China Youth Climate Action. By translating and searching for successful cases of youth climate actions both home and abroad, CYCAN integrated the different actual situations of the pilot HEIs and offered practicable guidelines for China youth climate actions.

E CYCAN Energy Consumption Database of HEIs

Since May 2008, CYCAN has been building the Energy Consumption Database of HEIs. Based on the data surveys of the Green Campus energy consumption, the database will be released on the Internet to keep the public, especially college students well-informed of the energy consumption situation on their campuses. With the help of school BBS and other well-planned activities, the database is intended to appeal to public for active involvement.

F International Exchanging Programs

International communications: Since 2007, CYCAN has been sending delegates to participate in international climate change conferences, negotiation conventions to present to the world the enthusiastic efforts made by the Chinese youth and their active participation in global climate change activities.
National communications: CYCAN will take every opportunity to invite foreign organizations and individuals to make direct dialogues with CYCAN, try every means to promote communication among experienced young people in specialized fields, and give impetus to our domestic climate change actions.
